In the textile sector Mexico has been gradually nibbling into China’s market. The high costs of production and strong demand in Asia has resulted in more trade in Mexican products than what existed in previous years.
In 2010 the GDP of the Mexican textile industry saw the most important growth in the last decade of 7.6%. This was higher than the Mexican economy as a whole which was only 5.5%. The apparel industry managed to grow by 5.2% according to figures from the Mexican Institute of Geography and Statistics (INEGI).
Exports managed to climb to US$996 million which represents an increase of 43% compared to 2009, according to Rodolfo García Muriel, president of the National Textile Industry Chamber (Canaintex).
Textile exports have also been diversifying. However, 66% still head to the US since this is still the primary market for Mexican products; 30.2% of sales abroad go to Latin America and 3.8% to Europe and Asia.
